Helping Make a Tangible Difference in Young Lives

Matt and Mary Palenica"The Phoenix Zoo is a beautiful oasis in the desert," Matt Palenica said. We couldn't describe it any better ourselves. Matt Palenica and his wife, Mary, have supported the Zoo since 1994. Originally from Ohio but having called themselves "Phoenicians" for decades, they felt it was important to contribute to local organizations making a tangible difference in the world.

"We just wanted to help," Matt said. "We love Arizona; it's our home. For many years, we gave to zoos and organizations outside of the state, too. Ultimately, we decided to focus our giving to Arizona-based organizations—like the Phoenix Zoo—and further support our local community. We feel that giving back and helping others is part of our duty—to pay our blessings forward, in a way."

The Palenicas saw an opportunity to help fund our ZooReach scholarship program. This unique program supports free or discounted admission to the Phoenix Zoo for Title I schools.

Through these scholarships, hundreds of underserved children each year have access to the Zoo and our life-changing programs designed to inspire others to care for the natural world. "The impact these scholarships make is remarkable," Matt added. "And there is a real need for funding. A visit to the Phoenix Zoo can change a child's life. How could anyone not support that now and into the future?

The Zoo does so much more than care for animals. There's a line in Alfred, Lord Tennyson's 'Ulysses' that states, 'I am a part of all that I have met.' To me, it illustrates how significant going to the Zoo and seeing these animals up close can be for these kids. It's an honor for Mary and me to help support that."
